Irish Sea Moss: Powerful and Nutritious

Sea Moss, whose scientific name is Chondrus crispus grows around the rocky North Atlantic Sea coasts of Maine, Canada, Great Britain, Scotland and especially Ireland.  In Jamaica, Gracilaria spp. – a seaweed similar to Chondrus Crispus – was adopted by the Irish settlers as their Sea Moss away from home.  Today, in the Caribbean, it is widely known as “Irish Moss”.  It has become a staple nutritious drink with very specific ingredients. These ingredients are cinnamon which is good for lowering blood sugar, nutmeg for soothing digestion, linseed – which is commonly called flaxseed – for the fiber, fats, and hormone modulating effects, and isinglass – which is a type of fish collagen – harvested by Jamaican fisherman long before it became commercially available as fish or marine collagen in local health food stores.  For those individuals who eat fish, isinglass can help strengthen bones, cartilage, the lining of the intestine and keep the skin wrinkle-free to maintain Aging Brilliantly.

Sea Moss (Chondrus crispus) and Irish Moss (Gracilaria spp) which are similar are packed with minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc, and can be used as a thickener in recipes.  It is often made into a gel that is used in a nutritious smoothie.

Here is how Sea/Irish Moss can be made.

  1. Soak the Sea/Irish Moss overnight in water.

  2. Rinse and wash the moss thoroughly of all salt and debris.

  3. Place it in a pot with just enough water to cover the moss and bring it to a boil.

  4. Reduce the heat and let it simmer until the moss dissolves to liquid.

  5. Pour the mixture into a glass container or porcelain bowl and refrigerate until it turns into a gel.

  6. To make a delicious, nutritious drink, simply blend a big scoop of the gel with almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, or hemp milk.

  7. Add some ground flaxseeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, Isinglass (or fish/marine collagen) and/or vanilla extract for added nutrition and flavor.

  8. Sweeten to taste with stevia – a safe sugar substitute – a small piece of banana, or a date.

Sea/Irish Moss is a great addition to our daily regimen.  It soothes our digestive tract with healing fiber and provides us with essential minerals our bodies need. It also provides Vitamins A, C, and E and it is a good source of iodine. Sea/Irish Moss also contains bioactive polysaccharides which provides us with anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer benefits. This seaweed also acts as a prebiotic to support the composition of our microbiomes.  It can feed and grow increasing amounts of friendly bacteria in our intestine and decrease the growth of pathogenic bacteria.  Preliminary research shows it might help with hypertension, respiratory function, and neurodegenerative diseases as well.
