How you can benefit from sweating

I never used to like sweating. And, I still don’t like sweating when I am all dressed up to see patients, even over Zoom. But let me tell you, and perhaps you’ll agree, that a good perspiration can be the most satisfying feeling especially after a workout.  It means you worked hard; used large muscle groups and raised your heart rate. Sweating is the way by which our body regulates its temperature.

The benefits of sweating are even greater. Sweating is good for you.

The water in your sweat carries out the dirt and grime sitting in your pores.  What else can clean out your pores so successfully?  Those blackhead strips work pretty well, but only on a small 2 inch or so portion of your face.

Some people think sweat can cause pimples, but only if you don’t wash it off.  Sweat contains urea which is used in many cosmetics to help smooth and moisturize the face.  In fact perspiration can contribute to healthy skin.

Sweating is a natural way for your body to detoxify.  It can help you get rid of the salt, toxins, dirt and metabolic byproducts of fat burning.

Researchers from Eberhard Karls University Tubingen in Germany demonstrated that human perspiration contains an antimicrobial peptide called dermcidin.  Dermicidin has the ability to fight disease causing bacteria on the skin.

So sweat today! And enjoy the benefits of sweating. Make sweating a daily habit like brushing your teeth.

Some people sweat daily with a workout (cardio or weight lifting) or some sweat by doing yard work (gardening or cleaning up)!  One of my patients mentioned buying their own sauna for their home since they miss sweating in one at the gym, and some sweat by just going out in the heat.

How do you sweat daily? I would love to hear about it in the comments.
